Mexico's Avocado Industry Continues To Grow

A poor harvest and the pandemic reduced exports last year, but the outlook is very positive over the long-term.

Mexican avocado exports are expected to reach 63 percent of global exports by 2030, according to the Agricultural Outlook for 2021-2030 of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

With the US continuing to grow, Mexico's biggest market, it is forecast to increase avocado production by more than five percent a year over the next decade.

Global avocado exports will reach 3.9 million tons by 2030, surpassing mangoes and pineapples as the most traded tropical fruit. Approximately 12m tons will be produced globally by 2030, up 300 percent from the previous year.

Several companies have invested heavily both in established and emerging regions to expand acreage for the fruit, cited in the report as the key drivers of growth. Mexico's avocado exports dropped by 8.1% to 1.3m tons last year because of the pandemic and a poor harvest. Meanwhile, global exports grew by double digits thanks to Peru, Colombia, and Kenya. Combined, these three countries shipped around 1/4 of all avocados globally in 2020.

Due to pandemic lockdowns and low supply from Mexico, avocado imports into the US - the world's largest avocado market - decreased by around 14.3 per cent last year.

Also, imports into the EU declined by approximately 2.5 percent last year, mainly due to restrictions imposed by COVID.
